Hedge cutting

Whether a hedge needs a routine tidy or you want to discuss more substantial growth, explain the result you have in mind. Hedge cutting enquiries are easier to assess when they describe the whole hedge, the available access and which parts you want worked on.

Include the useful measurements

Give an approximate length and height, and say whether one side or both sides are accessible. You do not need to climb or use a ladder to measure it. A photograph from the ground can help show the setting and any areas that are difficult to reach.

Tell us if the hedge follows a boundary, stands beside a public path, or can only be reached through a neighbouring space. Make access arrangements clear before work is agreed rather than assuming someone else’s land can be used.

Explain the amount of change

A light trim and a request for a major change in size are different tasks. Describe the shape and height you would like, and mention any earlier cutting or patchy growth that concerns you. The proposed work and its timing need to be discussed for the particular hedge, including any wildlife or nesting concerns.
